The Biology of Blastocyst Implantation
Following fertilization in the ampulla of the fallopian tube, the single-cell zygote begins rapid cleavage as it travels toward the uterus. By day 5–6, it forms a blastocyst with an inner cell mass (embryo) and outer trophoblast (placenta). The trophoblast adheres to and burrows into the receptive secretory endometrium between days 6 and 12 post-ovulation.
When to See a Doctor
Online calculators provide general estimates based on biological averages. Consult a healthcare provider (such as an OB/GYN or general practitioner) if you notice:
- Your periods suddenly become irregular after being consistent
- Your cycle is consistently shorter than 21 days or longer than 35 days
- Your period bleeding lasts longer than 7 days or is unusually heavy (soaking through a pad/tampon every hour)
- You experience severe, debilitating pelvic pain or cramping that disrupts daily life
- You experience bleeding between periods or after intercourse
- You are under 35 and have been trying to conceive for 12 months (or 6 months if 35+)
- Your period has stopped completely for 90 days or more (and you are not pregnant)
Frequently Asked Questions
Evidence-based answers to common questions about your cycle and fertility.
How many days after ovulation does implantation occur?
Implantation occurs between 6 and 12 days after ovulation (DPO), with the vast majority (84%) of successful implantations occurring on days 8, 9, or 10 DPO.
What are the symptoms of implantation?
Many women experience zero symptoms. Some notice light, short-lived pink or brown spotting (implantation bleeding), very mild lower pelvic cramping, or a brief dip and rebound in basal body temperature.
How soon after implantation will a pregnancy test be positive?
Once the blastocyst implants, the developing placenta begins producing hCG. It takes 2 to 3 days for hCG concentrations to rise high enough in urine to be detected by sensitive at-home test strips (around 10–14 DPO).
