Hormonal Physiology of the Follicular Phase
During the early follicular phase, FSH stimulates a cohort of ovarian follicles. As one follicle matures into the dominant Graafian follicle, it secretes estradiol. Estradiol thickens the endometrium to ~8–12 mm in preparation for embryo implantation.
What This Calculator Cannot Do
- It cannot replace clinical ultrasound monitoring of follicle size.
- It cannot predict precise ovulation if ovulation is delayed by acute illness or stress.
When to See a Doctor
Online calculators provide general estimates based on biological averages. Consult a healthcare provider (such as an OB/GYN or general practitioner) if you notice:
- Your periods suddenly become irregular after being consistent
- Your cycle is consistently shorter than 21 days or longer than 35 days
- Your period bleeding lasts longer than 7 days or is unusually heavy (soaking through a pad/tampon every hour)
- You experience severe, debilitating pelvic pain or cramping that disrupts daily life
- You experience bleeding between periods or after intercourse
- You are under 35 and have been trying to conceive for 12 months (or 6 months if 35+)
- Your period has stopped completely for 90 days or more (and you are not pregnant)
Frequently Asked Questions
Evidence-based answers to common questions about your cycle and fertility.
When does the follicular phase start and end?
The follicular phase starts on Cycle Day 1 (the first day of full menstrual bleeding) and ends on the day immediately preceding ovulation (for example, Day 14 in a 28-day cycle with Day 15 ovulation).
Why does the follicular phase vary more than the luteal phase?
Follicle recruitment and maturation speed depend on variable factors including stress, nutrition, sleep, thyroid levels, and age. This makes the follicular phase the primary source of overall cycle length variation.
What hormones dominate the follicular phase?
Follicle-Stimulating Hormone (FSH) initiates follicle growth, followed by rising estrogen (estradiol) secreted by the developing follicles, which thickens the endometrial lining and boosts cervical mucus quality.
